Active smart wearable orthosis for Enhanced Rehabilitation Therapy

Arthe is a project by Ortho-Medico NV and the Thomas More research group Mobilab, aimed at developing a new generation of intelligent rehabilitation aids that offer adaptive movement assistance to patients with weak or abnormal muscle control.

Causes for weak or abnormal muscle control can include a stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Rehabilitation equipment will initially be used in addition to current labour-intensive manual therapy. In a later stage they will enable patients to continue the therapy at home or in a (post) rehabilitation centre themselves. The LiCalab and EIZT testing grounds offer an ideal testing environment to identify the user requirements of both patients and physiotherapists. This means the product will be even more adapted to the end user's needs and requirements.

LiCalab organises:

  • Co-creation

sessions 10 patients: CVA patients, MS patients with reduced arm function but sufficient muscle stimuli 10 healthcare professionals: rehabilitation hospitals, rehabilitation centres, physiotherapist (practices) The scenario for the co-creation sessions is drawn up by LiCalab in close consultation with research group Mobilab and the company Ortho-Medico NV.

  • Life tests

During the life tests, 5 CVA patients perform several functional exercises supported by Arthe under their therapist's supervision. These life tests run for 2 to 3 weeks per patient. LiCalab recruits the healthcare institutions, therapists and patients to work with Arthe.

  • Business modelling

Co-creation sessions to measure the business model in Belgium and the Netherlands.
